Store topical testosterone in a safe place to protect it from theft. Testosterone gel 1.62% is contraindicated in pregnant women. Testosterone is teratogenic and may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman based on data from animal studies and its mechanism of action [see CONTRAINDICATIONS (4) and CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY (12.1)]. Exposure of a female fetus to androgens may result in varying degrees of virilization. In animal developmental studies, exposure to testosterone in utero resulted in hormonal and behavioral changes in offspring and structural impairments of reproductive tissues in female and male offspring. These studies did not meet current standards for nonclinical development toxicity studies. Once the application site is dry, the site should be covered with clothing [see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY (12.3)].

Check with your doctor right away if you have a chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing up blood, numbness or weakness in your arm or leg, or on one side of your body, or pain in your lower leg (calf) while using this medicine. If you feel that the medicine is not working as well, do not use more than your prescribed dose. Testosterone may cause birth defects if a pregnant woman comes in contact with the medicine.

Make sure to take extra precautions to protect other people from these risks. If you ever have any contact with children, take extra precautions to make sure they do not touch your application site. If you live with children, make sure you store the testosterone gel in a place where you’re sure your children can’t get to it. People who can breastfeed are not usually prescribed topical testosterone. Topical testosterone may cause harm to a breastfed baby. Tell your health care provider if you have any of the following.

After applying topical testosterone, do not go near an open flame or smoke until the product dries. Keep all appointments with your health care provider, including for blood tests, blood pressure checks, and other tests, before starting and while you are using topical testosterone. This will help your health care provider make sure it is safe for you to use topical testosterone. Drug abuse is intentional non-therapeutic use of a drug, even once, for its rewarding psychological and physiological effects. Abuse and misuse of testosterone are seen in male and female adults and adolescents.

Topical testosterone may increase levels of red blood cells, also called erythrocytosis or polycythemia. In severe cases, it may increase your risk for blood clots. Tell your health care provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of erythrocytosis or polycythemia.

Your doctor will perform tests to make sure testosterone is the right treatment for you. It may be harder for you to get a woman pregnant while you are using this medicine. Before you have any medical tests, tell the medical doctor in charge that you are using this medicine. The results of some tests may be affected by this medicine. In some cases, this medicine may decrease the amount of sperm men make and affect their ability to have children.
